Price rarely covers the entire distance in a single move. A correction often follows a visible impulse, and a Fibonacci grid helps measure its depth relative to the selected extremes. The OTE approach focuses on a deep retracement between the 0.62 and 0.79 levels.

The 0.705 level is often highlighted within this range. It lies approximately midway between 0.62 and 0.79 and helps divide the area visually, but it is not a separate confirmation. If price touches this line, it means only that the retracement has reached the corresponding proportion of the previous move.

The term is useful as a concise label for an observation area. Its meaning depends on the initial markup: choosing the wrong impulse produces the wrong range. You should therefore first understand swings and movement structure, and only then plot the levels.

The scale below illustrates the logic for an upward impulse. One end corresponds to the impulse's completion, where the retracement begins, while the other returns price to the start of the move. Standard Fibonacci grids often include 0.618, while OTE markup rounds the boundary to 0.62. Likewise, 0.786 may be displayed as 0.79. This is a matter of convenient labeling, not a change in the range's logic.

There is no need to add dozens of lines to the grid. For this task, the impulse boundaries and the 0.62, 0.705, and 0.79 levels are enough. The less auxiliary markup there is, the easier it is to verify that price is actually in the intended part of the move.

How do you plot OTE for an upward impulse?

First specify the timeframe. Then find the impulse's starting low and the high after which the retracement began. The two points must bound a clear directional section of the move, not a few random candles inside a range-bound market.

For an upward impulse, its length is the difference between the high and the low. The retracement level is calculated downward from the high: level = high - impulse length x coefficient. Thus, 0.62 means a retracement equal to 0.62 of the distance traveled, not continued growth.

Do not move the starting point after plotting the grid just because a new one looks more convenient. If a new confirmed high appears, acknowledge that the measured impulse has changed and recalculate the entire area. This keeps the markup testable.

How do you plot OTE for a downward impulse?

The logic is mirrored. Select the starting Swing High and ending Swing Low of a single downward impulse. Add a proportion of the move's length to the low according to the coefficient: low + impulse length x coefficient.

How the tool is oriented on screen depends on the platform. Before analyzing the chart, check where the scale's start and end appear and which price leg they measure. Plotting it in the wrong direction can visually place the same coefficients in another part of the chart even though the retracement formula has not changed.

OTE markup does not determine direction on its own. Direction comes from the selected impulse leg and its place within the broader structure. If the hourly chart is rising while the five-minute chart is in a local decline, first decide which scale is relevant to your plan.

The first filter concerns impulse quality. If its start and end cannot be explained without constantly moving the lines, the range is subjective. The second filter concerns structure: a deep retracement in a strong directional move and the same numbers inside a chaotic range have different contexts.

The third filter provides its own confirmation. This may be a reaction on a closed candle, a change in the local sequence of highs and lows, or another rule defined in advance. It is also useful to assess market participation separately through a volume indicator, but neither volume nor OTE replaces risk constraints.

Example OTE zone calculation

Consider an illustrative upward impulse from 80 to 120. Its length is 40 units. The 0.62 boundary is calculated as 120 - 40 × 0.62 = 95.2. The 0.705 level equals 120 - 40 × 0.705 = 91.8. The 0.79 boundary equals 120 - 40 × 0.79 = 88.4.

In this example, the working area lies between 95.2 and 88.4. The numbers run from high to low because we are measuring a retracement after an advance. For a downward impulse, the calculation is mirrored: the coefficients are added to the ending low.

This example illustrates the mechanics, not the probability of an outcome. Price may reverse earlier, cross the entire range, or never return to it. External events and high volatility can quickly invalidate a technical scenario.

How is OTE related to Premium and Discount?

In a bullish scenario, the part of the range below its midpoint is often called Discount, while the upper part is called Premium. In a bearish scenario, the assessment is oriented to the direction of the idea. OTE specifies how deeply price has returned into the previous impulse and can therefore lie within the corresponding half of the range.

The main danger is mixing different boundaries. If Premium and Discount are plotted over a broad daily range while OTE measures a separate hourly impulse, their midpoints refer to different moves. First label the timeframe and the extremes of each grid, then evaluate where the areas overlap.

The overlap of several sets of markup is sometimes called confluence, or a combination of factors. It does not make the scenario a guarantee. The trading plan must still include separate conditions for confirmation and invalidation.

What mistakes are made when working with OTE?

The first mistake is stretching the Fibonacci grid over any convenient section. A move must have a clear beginning and end. If a neighboring swing changes the meaning of the impulse, revise the markup instead of hiding an inconvenient point.

The second mistake is seeking precision to the last decimal place. Displaying 0.618 instead of 0.62 does not make one line correct and the other incorrect. OTE describes an area, so evaluate the reaction within the context of the range, structure, and strategy rules.

The third mistake is treating the first touch as confirmation. Price may enter the range, pause near 0.705, and then continue its correction beyond 0.79. Without a predefined invalidation condition, the idea becomes a commitment to waiting for a reversal at any cost.

The fourth mistake is adding too many indicators after every failed observation. It is more useful to keep the testing procedure consistent and study technical analysis as a set of distinct tasks rather than a collection of lines on one chart.

How do you incorporate OTE into a trading plan?

An observation can be stated as follows: 'An upward impulse from A to B has completed on the hourly chart; the 0.62-0.79 area is used only to look for a predefined reaction.' This records the facts without promising a future move.

The next line should describe confirmation. For example, a candle may close back above the selected boundary, or a local sequence may form on the lower timeframe. The strategy itself defines the exact rule, but it must not be changed after the move.

Then specify scenario invalidation and risk. A move beyond 0.79 is not universally an invalidation: one system may treat it as such, while another may require a breach of a structural extreme. The rule must be written down in advance so that it limits losses instead of explaining the chart in hindsight.

Risks and limitations

Fibonacci levels describe proportions of an already selected move. They do not prove that market participants see the same extremes, and they do not account for news, liquidity gaps, fees, or an individual's risk profile.
